Great News Closer to Home……

Marine Conservation Issues No Comments »

The new Marine Park along the coast between the Medes Islands and L’Escala has been passed by the Catalan government.

The local authority has agreed to remove the old destructive make-shift buoys in Cala Montgo, where we have been carrying out research on the Posidonia seagrass meadows for the past 5 years, and to replace them with ecological buoys.

Volunteer divers needed for SILMAR Project

Marine Conservation Issues, Scuba Diving 1 Comment »

The marine research  is progressing well documenting the ecosystems and key species present in Cala Montgo as part of the SILMAR project mapping of coastal habitats around the Iberian peninsular.

Last week we had a camera crew from the spanish channel TV3 who came out to dive with us to document the importance of the marine conservation work that we are doing.

We still need the help of volunteer divers during April to October every year. Come and get involved!

You’ll enjoy unlimited Mediterranean diving from the lovely town of L’Escala, staying at subsidised rates on the sunny Costa Brava!

New Costa Brava Marine Natural Park

Marine Conservation Issues, Scuba Diving 9 Comments »

The Catalan government has agreed to form a new Natural Park from the Medes Islands up the coast from the Mongri Massif to Cala Montgo, L’Escala. It will also extend inland to include wooded hillsides and paddy fields in the west and the river Ter and its wetlands region in the south.

This is great news for scuba divers as the marine protected area will encompass some of the best dive sites on the Costa Brava. Not only will the famous Medes Islands marine reserve receive a greater level of protection, seagrass meadows and corals will no longer be subjected to fishing and anchor damage.
